Hiring Laura as my attorney turned into one of the most stressful, exhausting, and expensive legal mistakes I have ever made, and looking back, I truly wish I had never trusted her with something as important as my family’s property process. What should have been a straightforward legal procedure became a never-ending ordeal that dragged on for years — not months, years — full of delays, lack of follow-through, poor communication, and problems that I later had to pay other professionals to fix. I met Laura back in 2015–2016 when we worked together at FARM (First American Realty Medellín). Because of that history, I trusted her when I later moved to the United States and started sending money to Colombia to buy apartment units from my family and to complete a legal process called “Desenglobe y Reglamento de Propiedad Horizontal.” Since she was an attorney in Colombia and worked with real estate matters, I believed my case would be handled professionally and correctly. I paid every invoice she sent without question. I never asked for discounts, never argued about money, and always provided every document she requested. At the beginning everything seemed fine, but after some time the process slowed down more and more. I constantly had to chase her just to get updates. Communication became inconsistent, deadlines passed, and the work simply did not move forward the way it should have. After a long time and multiple payments, the process was still unfinished. Then she had personal issues and stopped working on my case almost without notice, and I had to insist several times just to get my documents back. By that point I had already spent years trusting that the process was being handled correctly. When I finally hired another attorney and an architect in Colombia to review everything, I was told that the situation needed significant corrections before the process could even continue. The paperwork had to be reorganized, registrations had to be reviewed, and mistakes had to be fixed before anything could move forward. Because of how the subdivision had been registered, my grandmother ended up paying taxes for years that should not have been necessary, and some properties were recorded in a way that could have created serious legal complications within the family. Fixing those issues took years of additional work, more legal fees, and dealing with the already complicated Colombian property registration system. We started this process around 2016–2017, and it was not until 2026, after working with a different legal team and an architect in my hometown, that everything was finally corrected and properly registered with valid titles. The amount of time, stress, and extra money this required was far beyond what I ever expected when I first trusted her to handle the case. Some of the registrations related to the purchase documents and my grandmother’s will were not done in the way I understood they should have been, and the situation could have turned into a serious legal conflict if my family had not respected the original agreement. Realizing how close this came to becoming a major problem was extremely frustrating. I never asked for my money back, and I kept every invoice, email, and proof of payment. What disappointed me the most was the lack of communication, the lack of follow-up, and the feeling that I was left alone to deal with the consequences after trusting her with something so important, especially considering that we had known each other for years. Based on my personal experience, my advice to anyone considering hiring her is to review every document carefully, verify every registration, and seriously consider getting a second professional opinion before moving forward. In my case, the process was only completed after hiring other professionals and paying far more than I ever expected in the first place.
